The knot, and what it stands for

The witch knot — four loops woven from a single line, with no beginning and no end — is one of the oldest protective charms in folk tradition: worn to hold your own energy in and keep other people’s out. On the hand, it is the charm you see all day.

The stone at the centre is your birth month’s. Tradition has it that the two together keep you grounded while whatever isn’t meant for you finds its way back out.

Size & materials

Knot face 11.6 mm (0.46 in) wide, with a 4 mm square-cut birthstone at the centre and small clear stones set along the loops. 2.3 g.

Copper with a bright polished finish; the stones are cubic zirconia. Adjustable open band: the two ends overlap at the back, so you can gently ease it open or closed to fit your finger.

Care

Take it off before washing up, showering, swimming or sleeping. Hand cream and perfume go on first, the ring after.

Wipe the knot with a soft dry cloth. No jewellery dip, no alcohol — the finish does not survive either. Adjust the band gently, and not every day.

How it works

Choose it, then wear it

  1. 1

    Choose your month

Twelve stones, one for each birth month. The knot and the band stay the same; the square stone at the centre changes.

  2. 2

    Slip it on

The band is open at the back. Press it gently to close it, or ease it open, until it sits comfortably on your finger.

  3. 3

    Leave it on

At 2.3 g it is light enough to forget you have it on. In the old practice the charm is meant to be worn daily, not saved for occasions.

Why people wear the witch knot

A knot with no beginning

Four loops woven into one continuous line. Folk practice knows the shape as the witch knot, worn for protection against envy, bad intentions and energy that is not yours.

Your stone at the centre

A square-cut birthstone sits in the middle of the knot. Choosing your own month is what turns a pretty ring into something that belongs to you.

Made to be worn every day

Open-worked knot, small clear stones along the loops and an adjustable band. Light on the finger, so it does not become the thing you take off at lunchtime.

Some people wear a charm. Some people wear armour.

Some people wear a charm. Some people wear armour.

The witch knot has been worn for centuries for one reason: to hold your own energy in and keep everyone else’s out.

You do not have to believe the legend for it to do something. Putting it on in the morning is a small, deliberate act, and most people say that is the part that sticks.

The knot of twilight

The knot of twilight

Old stories call it the knot of twilight — the charm for whispers, jealousy and intentions people do not say out loud.

The small clear stones along the loops are faceted, so the knot catches the light every time your hand moves.

Twelve stones, one for you

Twelve stones, one for you

Garnet, amethyst, aquamarine, diamond, emerald, alexandrite, ruby, peridot, sapphire, tourmaline, citrine, tanzanite — a square-cut stone for every month of the year.

It is also why it works as a gift: you choose their month, and they know it was chosen rather than picked off a shelf.

Close enough to see the work

Close enough to see the work

The knot is open, not stamped — you can see through the loops, and the small stones are set one by one along each curve.

The band is open at the back, so it adjusts to your finger without a trip to the jeweller.

FAQ

What is a witch knot?

It is a knot of four loops drawn in one unbroken line. In folk practice it is worn as a protective charm, and it has long been used as a love knot too. Both readings belong to the same symbol.

Which birthstone do I pick?

The month you were born. January garnet, February amethyst, March aquamarine, April diamond, May emerald, June alexandrite, July ruby, August peridot, September sapphire, October tourmaline, November citrine, December tanzanite.

Are the stones real gemstones?

No — they are faceted cubic zirconia in the colour of each birthstone. That is what keeps a ring like this at this price.

Will it fit my finger?

The band is open at the back, so it adjusts: press it gently to close it or ease it open until it sits comfortably. The knot face is 11.6 mm (0.46 in) wide.

Will it tarnish?

Kept dry and away from perfume and hand cream it holds its shine; worn in the shower, the pool or while washing up, it will not.

Does it make a good gift?

Yes. You choose their birth month, and they know it was chosen rather than picked off a shelf.
